Makale, the capital of Tana Toraja Regency, is a small lovely town located 310 North of Makassar and 18 km South of Rantepao. Makale still plays a vital role in the Toraja Tourism, although most travelers proceed their journey to Rantepao as soon as they hit Toraja land. Buses from Makassar to Rantepao and from Rantepao to Makassar usually stop at their station in Makale. The Tana Toraja Airport (Pongtiku Airport) is also located near Makale.

What to see in Makale
In the heart of the town there is a beautiful Catholic Santa Maria Church. There also a large pool with a giant statue of Toraja mythical legend "Lakipadada" in the center of the pool.
